Raise your hand if you are ready for winter to be over.  Where I live, we have received so far 24 inches of rain in the past two months.  That means it’s been a lot of time spent indoors looking out the windows at gray skies and squishy, wet yards.  It has given some good time for indoor work, spring cleaning, and decluttering.

I have sorted through my beloved “junk” and picked the things to keep that really bring me joy (Thank you, Marie Kondo).  Now, I am on the hunt for stylish storage solutions. Craftsman bungalows have a lot of positives, but an abundance of large closets is definitely not one of them.  When it comes to storage, the options are endless. Personally, I love the versatility of a storage chest.

Storage chests can range in style from simple to ornate, from large to small.  I have seen larger chests build and used as window seats. They also make great places for storing toys with easy access to encourage freedom in picking out items or putting them away.  We use a storage chest at the end of our bed for storing extra blankets and pillows. And conveniently enough for our pups, it’s a great jumping assist to get in the bed and snuggle.

This is a project for woodworkers where you can really hone and show off some impressive skills.  It’s also a great project to repeat and change based on wanting different style elements or materials.  The chest also makes an impressive and special gift, or for entrepreneurs, it can be a piece to commission and sell once the project has been mastered.

In the case of the Superior Shop Drawings Blanket Chest, we tried to keep the design simple but elegant. The case features Flat Panels that can easily be made on a table saw – without the need for specialty Cope & Stick cutters.

Our Blanket Chest Woodworking Plans are drawn on standard letter size paper for ease of printing. We have also included a parts list, hardware list, and plywood cutting diagram. In addition to the standard Plans, Elevations, and Sections – we’ve also provided a number of detail drawings to simplify construction.

These Free DIY Woodworking Plans can be downloaded below. Enjoy the plans – feel free to share them and leave a comment below telling us how your project went!  We would love to see a photo, too.
